The Whirlpool of Routine.

11 days into the New Year already, how terrifying is that? I sincerely hope that you are all having an amazing time so far but sadly most of the hope people were filled with about the turn of a new chapter in their life is now slowly beginning to fade away. Work and School has kicked back in, there is less chocolate in the house and we are all being sucked into the whirlpool of routine.

Routine causes days to go by with little or no meaning, it is a prison, it traps us from what we want to do and becomes all too regular. So here's a challenge, a New Years Resolution, break free from your routine everyday. Just one little thing is all it takes, switch things up a bit, take the long way to work/school, read a book instead of watching TV, meet up with a friend instead of going on Facebook, learn a new song on an instrument, cook something weird - I don't know, i'm sure you know what I mean, do this and you will begin to appreciate life all that much more. Try to see one beautiful thing in each dayT and I promise you it will bless you beyond you can imagine. This goes the same for exams, at the minute it is exam season for me and it really annoys me the way people just shut down and go into 'revision mode' I know they don't revise for 12 hours a day so why exclude yourself from life around exams?! If anything you should be taking more time to relax and enjoy yourself to stop yourself from losing sanity due to revision. But hey, what can ya do!

In regards to New Years Resolutions, keep at them! They keep that New Year promise of change real to you and are also very rewarding to see them through. Last year my resolution was to 'Only drink water, milk and herbal tea.' it was pretty tough me being the huge coffee fan I am but hey! I did it, and keeping a New Years Resolutions for the whole year is now something I can tick off my Bucket List, not to mention I appreciate coffee so much more now...

So my resolutions this year:

  • Take a photo of myself everyday.
  • Write a Novel - 'The Prince of Italy
  • Write a Poetry Anthology -   'Resolution of Rhyme' or
'Life through the eyes of a Dreamer'

All of these were given to me by friends, I have found them not so bad so far, the photo thing is pretty fun but when you forget to take the photo until 03:30 am then it results in some zombie looking photos, also after 11 days I am already running out of ways to smirk... The novel I had wanted to do this year so I happily said yes when someone suggested it, I have a decently idea and a rough idea of characters and plot but yet I have zero motivation for writing and I blame that on poetry. The Anthology was just a little something I thought I would take up on the side but it has consumed me, I am really getting into it, I have an all new appreciation for poems now and I highly suggest it is something you at least try, it is captivating and very freeing. But to be fair it is developing the bases of quite alot of ideas I will build on for the novel which is the silver lining for the book at this moment in time I suppose. But my 'Resolution of Rhyme' is something I am really enjoying.

Well for my first post I am quite happy about this, it feels good to have no idea what you going to say and then just go for it. I can see myself blogging regularly its pretty fun.I rambled a good bit so if you read nothing above in summary I'll leave you with this:

'It is the simple amazing little moments in life that allow you to see the bigger picture' - Matthew Thompson.

So guys, have a good day, do something different and enjoy yourself :D

Live a alot not a little! Thanks for reading guys :)

Matt.

  1. I've given up on New Year Resolutions, I never keep them anyway^^You may be the first person I hear saying that you've actually managed to keep your resolution for a full year...I'm impressed!
The routine kills me, thanks for making me realize this. Guess I'll follow your advice.
As for your novel, I can only encourage you to keep writing no matter what (easier said than done...it took me two years to write mine).
Anyway, happy blogging! I'm also new to this, and enjoying it so far.

  2. Hey Matthew, James scott here, love the blog its so inspiring and i'm sure there are loads of people who will read this and say the same, your that kind of guy :) Hope you keep the resolutions, I know it can be a real challenge as i failed my one last year to save water by not letting the tap run when brushing, but keep at it.
Don't worry about the poetry keeping you away from your novel as its only the 12th and there's still plenty of time!
Looking forward to the new year more than ever now, see ya round!
